You're invited to a Kiwi Bird Wedding!

It's a bird!

It's a plane!

It's a...no, wait, you were right the first time. That funny-looking feathered friend is the Kiwi bird.

The Kiwi is a flightless bird from New Zealand. You don't know anything about New Zealand? See our previous post about the Kiwifruit.  The Kiwi bird is about the size of a chicken. The Kiwi is also the national bird of New Zealand.

Activity:

The Kiwi mates for life, sometimes up to 20 years. Let's have a Kiwi wedding! You'll need two Kiwi fruit, two grapes (or a substitute), two toothpicks, a popsicle stick, and some wedding "garments" for your birds. Using a toothpick, connect the grape to the top of the kiwi to make a head. You might need to make a small slit with a knife to push in the toothpick (be careful of little hands!). Break the popsicle stick in half and push the sharp, broken end into the grape to make a beak. Lastly, use some loose fabric or construction paper to dress your "bird" in its wedding outfit. Rinse and repeat for the second Kiwi. Don't forget to name your birds! A detailed schematic is below ;)

Now let your kids' imaginations run wild and have the wedding of their dreams. And when you're done, you have some delicious dessert ready to go. Just watch out for those toothpicks!
